On the trail of
the very best Balti in Birmingham
Not being a big fan of genuine 'mop your brow' curry I found a delicious
alternative Balti. Everyone knows that Birmingham is the Balti-belt but with such
a bewildering number of restaurants to choose from it's difficult to know where
to go.
I have found a Gem in the Shabar Tandoori in Sheldon. The Balti experience should
be more than just a dish and the service and ambiance of the Shabar gave me just
that with traditional music and candles, and the ceremony of still sizzling food
being wheeled to my table.
It may sound obvious but popadums and mint sauce are a must. They have a blend of
yoghurt and mint just right. There is an extensive menu with everything from Chicken
Tikka to traditional English fare for the faint-hearted.
I like a medium curry and one with lots of flavour, colour and aroma. I found
my favourite Rogan Josh. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of vegetables
and the fact that they weren't soggy, the potatoes were also well cooked and
not hastily served up.
My Partner had Chicken Balti and commented that the meat was tender and juicy as
it should be.
The Servings were very generous and I never made it to dessert!
But what made the biggest impression on me was the service - attentive but not intrusive,
formal but not distant.
